Transcription Regulators
Proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences to control whether a gene is "read" (transcribed) by RNA polymerase.
Transcription Activators
Proteins that bind to DNA to increase the rate of transcription (the "gas pedal").
Repressors
Proteins that bind to DNA to block RNA polymerase, preventing transcription (the "brake").
Operon
A cluster of genes in prokaryotes that are transcribed together as a single mRNA molecule, controlled by one promoter.
DNA Looping
A structural change where DNA bends to bring a distant activator protein (on an enhancer) into physical contact with the gene’s promoter.
