Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
A professional designated by AWS who has met specific qualifications and standards in welding inspection.
Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
A document that provides the welding process and controls required for a specific welding application.
Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)
A record of tests conducted to demonstrate that the welding procedure provides welds of acceptable quality.
Visual Inspection
A method of examining welds or components using visual assessments to ensure that specifications are met.
Fillet Weld
A type of weld that joins two surfaces at a right angle to each other, triangular in cross-section.
Incomplete Fusion (IF)
A defect characterized by the absence of fusion between the weld metal and the base material.
Inadequate Penetration (IP)
A defect where the weld does not penetrate fully into the root of the joint.
Porosity (P)
Gas pockets trapped in the weld metal, leading to reduced strength and integrity of the weld.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
A nondestructive testing method that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect imperfections in materials.
Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
A heat treatment process applied to a welded component to relieve stress and improve metallurgical properties.
