Softwood

from coniferous tress which are evergreen, needle-leaved, cone-bearing trees, such as cedar, fir and pine

Hardwood

from broad-leaved deciduous trees. (beech, cherry, elm, mahogany, oak and teak

Man-Made Board/Manufactured Board

processed timber, used to improve the properties of the material including plywood, MDF (Medium- Density Fibreboard) and block board

Features of man-made boards

• can come in larger sheets

• very stable, won’t warp and twist like natural timbers

• strong in multiple directions

• can be cheaper than natural materials

• can be covered in a thin layer of natural wood, called a veneer to make it look natural
