S.H.E.L Model
Human-factors framework standing for Software, Hardware, Environment, and Liveware, used to analyze interactions that can lead to errors.
Ferry (Special Flight) Permit
Authorization that allows an aircraft that has failed inspection to fly to a maintenance base for repairs.
Airworthiness Directive (AD)
Legally mandatory notice issued by the FAA to correct an unsafe condition on an aircraft, engine, propeller, or appliance.
Advisory Circular (AC)
FAA guidance document that is generally non-mandatory unless specifically referenced in an AD.
Structural Repair Manual (SRM)
Manufacturer-published document detailing approved methods for repairing an aircraft’s structure.
One-Time AD
Airworthiness Directive that requires compliance only once to correct the specified unsafe condition.
Recurring (Re-occurring) AD
Airworthiness Directive that must be complied with at specified intervals or repetitive cycles.
Return to Service (RTS)
Action taken by an A&P after maintenance/inspection: make a logbook entry, complete forms, sign, and release the aircraft for flight.
Service Bulletin (SB)
Manufacturer-issued document providing recommended repairs or modifications; becomes mandatory only if referenced by an AD or an approved inspection program.
AD Issuance Frequency
Airworthiness Directives are published bi-weekly—26 times each year.
Maintenance Record Entry
Logbook documentation where a mechanic records completion and compliance with an AD or other maintenance action.
Owner / Operator Responsibility
Primary owner and/or pilot-operator are responsible for keeping all aircraft maintenance records current.
FAR 65.73 Ratings
Certificates for mechanics: Airframe rating and Powerplant rating.
Omission Error
Human error type where a required action is left out.
Commission Error
Human error type where an incorrect action is performed.
Extraneous Error
Human error type involving unnecessary actions that can introduce risk.
Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS)
FAA document listing approved engines, propellers, and other specifications for a particular aircraft model.
FAR Part 43.11
Regulation that prescribes the content and certification requirements for aircraft inspection entries.
Annual Inspection Interval
Annual inspection is due within 12 calendar months; an inspection performed 5 Mar 2021 expires on the last day of March 2022.
