What are the characteristics of /ŋ/

Only occurs after a vowel (pot vocalically)- cannot begin a word

Created by velar place assimilation- /n/ becomes /ŋ/- changes its place of articulation to velar when it’s followed by a velar consonant (/k/ or /g/)

Some words have had a /g/ after /ŋ/ (ex. singer or finger) but modern English keeps

/ŋ/ alone in some words and /ŋg/ in others.
