What is Cartone?

A full-size drawing made as a model for a painting, tapestry, or other work of art

What is Pouncing?

A technique of transferring a drawing or design by pricking holes along the lines of the drawing and then dabbing powdered pigment through the holes onto the surface to be decorated

What is Linear Perspective?

A system of creating an illusion of depth on a flat surface using a horizon line, vanishing point, and orthogonal lines

What is a Vanishing Point?

The apparent convergence point at which parallel lines receding in depth seem to meet.

What are Orthogonal lines?

Imaginary lines connecting a point on an object to the vanishing point.

What is Aerial or Atmospheric Perspective?

A technique that creates the illusion of distance by the use of less distinct contours and a reduction in color intensity

What is Sfumato?

A painting technique which superimposed many layers of translucent colors to create perceptions of depth, volume and form.

What is Tempera painting?

A painting medium in which pigments are mixed with egg yolk.

What is Oil painting?

A painting technique using pigments bound with drying oils.

Who is a Patron?

The person or group that commissions and pays for a work of art.

Who is the Artist?

The artist who creates the artwork.

Who is an Iconographic advisor?

A person who advises the artist on the iconography or subject matter of the artwork.

What is Venus Pudica (Modest Venus)?

A pose in which Venus covers her breasts and genitals with her hands.

What is a Tondo?

A round painting or relief sculpture.

What is Chiaroscuro?

The treatment of light and shade in a work of art, especially to give an illusion of depth.

What is Figura Serpentinata?

A snake-like or serpentine twisting pose.

What is Contrapposto

A posture in sculpture where the weight is shifted onto one leg, creating a sense of dynamism and naturalism.
