‘Rule by the people’ - everyone has a say in how the country is run (it ensures everyone’s voice is heard).

Rules and laws are created to keep us safe and secure.
Freedom of speech
Having the right to voice your opinion freely as long as it’s not hateful or harmful to others.
Individual liberty
Developing your confidence and self esteem to succeed to the best of your abilities.
e.g being confident in yourself helps you aim high without worrying about others criticising you.
Mutual respect
Treat others how you would like to be treated.
Tolerance of those with other faiths and beliefs
Treat those with differing views with respect and manners.
What is PMQs?
Prime minister questions takes place every Wednesday at 12 pm in the House of Commons; this is when the MPs ask the PM questions. The opposition uses this to make the government look bad and ask critical questions.
What are the 4 types of democracy?
Direct
Representative
Constitutional
Liberal
What is direct democracy?
When the citizens rather than the representatives make decisions; no distinction (difference) between gov and the citizens. The UK can’t be fully governed by citizens because there’s over 40 million voters.
What is representative democracy?
Citizens elect a representative to make political decisions and represent their interests on their behalf. The UK is a representative democracy.
e.g Theresa May- a remainer during the Brexit debate went to lead a gov committed to leaving the EU.
What are constituents?
The people who elected a representative.
What is a remainer?
Someone who supports staying in the EU.
What is the House of Lords?
The unelected house in Parliament with approximately 800 members. The rule of the Lords is to scrutinise (research/ examine) legislation.
What is the House of Commons?
The elected house in Parliament with 650 members. They pass legislation and scrutinise the actions of the government.
What are MPs?
Members of Parliament are politicians elected Usually during a general election by-election.
What is a prime minister?
The head of government.
