syntax
sentence structure- this study involves looking at an author's use of sentence structure in conjunction with mood and tone to determine meaning
tempo
the pace or speed of speech and also the degree to which individual sounds are fully articulated or blurred together
textual evidence
evidence, gathered from the original source or other texts, that supports an argument or thesis
third-person narrator
stories where a detached person (someone who isn't directly involved in the action) tells you everything that happens. Can sometimes be omniscient (all-knowing) or limited (only a few perspectives)
tone
expresses the writer's or speaker's attitude toward or feelings about the subject matter
topic sentence
a sentence that captures the meaning of the entire paragraph or group of sentences
transitional elements
words, phrases, clauses, sentences, or paragraphs that assist in creating coherence between sentences and paragraphs by showing relationships between ideas
understatement
when a writer presents a situation or thing as if it is less important or serious than it really is
unresolved ending
the overarching plot is left unfinished and the ultimate outcome of the characters' story arcs is unknown based on the textual information
verbal irony
when a person says one thing and means another, or uses words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of the literal meaning
thesis statement
a short statement that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc and is developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence
