Cell Wall
Stiff structure that surrounds the cell membrane and gives the cell shape - PLANT CELLS ONLY
cell membrane
Controls what materials go into and out of the cell.
Nucleus
Controls all cell activities and protein production. Contains the DNA and nucleolus.
Cytoplasm
A jellylike substance that fills most of the cell.
Vacuole
Stores food and water as well as waste until it can be moved out.
Chloroplast
Gives plants their green color and helps make food. PLANT CELLS ONLY
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, Breaks down material and releases energy to the cell.
Vacuole
Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell
Nucleus
Control center of the cell, brain of cell
animal cell contains:
Cell membrane, nucleus, vacuoles, mitochondria, cytoplasm
plant cell contains
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, chloroplasts, cell wall, vacuole
cell membrane
A semi-permeable membrane that encloses the contents of a cell. Both animal and plant cells have this.
Nucleus
Membrane bound organelle of eukaryotic cells where chromosomes are housed and replicated (DNA) Both animal and plant cells have this.
Lysosomes
Contained in the cytoplasm. Contains a number of enzymes that help in the digestion of substances in the cell. ANIMAL CELLS ONLY.
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Membrane bound organelles that consist of sac like structures. They help in the production of proteins and liquid. Both animal and plant cells have this.
Golgi body
A flattened sac like structure which receives and processes proteins from the Endoplasmic Reticulum, and transports them to various locations. Both animal and plant cells have this.
Mitochondria
They act as the powerhouse of the cell, converting food into energy. Both animal and plant cells have this.
Cytoplasm
Inside of eukaryotic cells thus serving as a store house of the cell. Both animal and plant cells have this.
Vacuole
A plant cell that contains water and other solutes. Only plant cells have this.
Cell wall
A structural layer surrounding a cell just outside the cell membrane. It can be tough, flexible, and sometimes rigid. PLANT CELLS ONLY
Chloroplasts
Can produce their own food. They serve as the site for photosynthesis. PLANT CELLS ONLY
Nucleus
Control center of the cell - DNA and chromosomes with genetic information
Cloroplast
Makes sugars and starches through photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars
Cell
The basic unit of structure and function in living things
Microscopic
too small to be seen except under a microscope
Organism
A living thing
