Censorship
The practice of suppressing and limiting access to materials considered obscene, offensive or a threat to security. People may also be restricted in their speech by censorship laws.
Discrimination
Acts of treating people or groups differently based on prejudice.
Extremeism
Believing in and supporting ideas that are very far from what most people consider reasonable.
Human Rights
The basic entitlements of all humans afforded to them, simply because they are human. An example from the declaration of human rights is the right to an education.
Personal Conviction
Something a person feels strongly about or believes in.
Prejudice
Prejudging someone to be inferior or superior without cause.
Relative Poverty
A standard of poverty measured in relation to the standards of a society in which a person lives. Fore example, living on less that X percent of average income.
Absolute Poverty
An acute state of deprivation, whereby a person cannot access their basic human needs.
Social Justice
Promoting a fair society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity. Ensuring everyone has equal opportunities and rights.
What do 'Amnesty International' do?
Work worldwide to protect and campaign for men, women and children whose basic human rights are denied. They do protest marches, write letters to the government and raise awareness through social media.
Humanist attitudes to human rights and social injustice
They believe the basic human rights are: respect all humans, support freedom of belief and expression, tolerance for all beliefs and ways of life as long as they don't harm others.
Christian attitudes to human rights and social injustice
Human rights reflect the main principles of Christianity. Everyone has worth and value as we are all made in the image of God. 'So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.'- Genesis 1:26-27. They believe each person should be treated and loved unconditionally- agape love.
Muslim attitudes to human rights and social injustice
Muslims are obliged to oppose injustice and oppression no matter the victim because the Qur'an teaches the equality of all humans. For Muslims, worth and dignity are given by God and can't be taken away.
Religious Extremeism
When some religious believers feel their beliefs are so important they feel justified to act in a certain extreme way to make others believe what they do.
