Why is simple diffusion not an option for gas exchange in larger organisms?

The metabolically active tissue is deeper within the organism and does not have contact with the outside.

2
New cards

How the does SA:V ratio change as an organism gets larger?

It decreases as the organism gets larger.

3
New cards

What limits an organism ability to exchange things with the environment?

Limited surface area

4
New cards

What type of transportation is used in gas exchange? What does this mean?

diffusion; there needs to be a [ ] gradient

5
New cards

All animals that have gills are what in relation to the regulation of temperature? Why?

exothermic; The oxygen level in water is too low to support the metabolism needed to be endothermic

Describe the [O2] and [CO2] within the gills

The blood the travels to the gills has been in the body where respiration has taken place, therefore, there will be more CO2 and less O2. It leaves the gills oxygenated.

7
New cards

What increases the SA in gills?

gill lamellae

Describe the [O2] and [CO2] in the air in the lung capillaries compared to recently inspired air.

The air in the lung capillaries has less O and more CO2 bc it came from the body which has been respirating
