Militarism
The buildup of weapons and military to have a strong country
Alliances
Countries that formed a military alliance for protection. (It would help the other country if they entered into a conflict)

Strong feeling of pride in one’s country
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne. He was assassinated by Princip, which was the spark that caused WWI.
Powder Keg
Europe before WW I, something was about to explode caused by strong nationalism and the buildup of weapons

Message sent to Mexico from Germany to go to war with America, in return, Mexico would get land in California and New Mexico.
Lusitania
A passenger ship that German U-boats sank while practicing unrestricted submarine warfare.

Military draft requiring men 21-30 to register for military

Trench Warfare
New method of fighting that protected soldiers from enemy fire, provided room where they could eat and sleep. Thousands of miles of trenches were dug during the war.
Propaganda
Lies that spread ideas that hurt one cause to help another.
Woodrow Wilson
The US president, who at first vowed to keep the US out of the war. Due to many incidents, he would go on to ask Congress to declare war in 1917
Vladimir Lenin
Leader of the Communist Revolution in Russia
Communist Revolution
Lenin’s forces take over the Russian government. Communism takes root and rules for over 70 years.
Schenck vs the U.S
Court case in 1919. Schenck was distributing antiwar and anti-draft pamphlets. He was arrested and charged with breaking the Sedition Act (1917).
Espionage Act
Passed in 1917, set strict penalties for anyone who interfered with recruiting soldiers or made statements hindering the war effort.
Sedition Act
Passed in 1918, this act made it illegal to say disloyal statements about the Constitution, the government, the flag, or the armed forces.
Liberty Bonds
Bonds sold to US citizens in order to help raise money for the war. People would purchase the bond, thus giving their money to the government. The bond would often gain interest over time.
League of Nations
Proposed by Woodrow Wilson at the end of WWI. This was to be a peacekeeping organization that would hopefully work to avoid future conflicts. The league was adopted by the Treaty of Versailles, however, the US refused to join the league.
Treaty of Versailles
Treaty which ended WWI. Called for harsh treatment of Germany, Germany accepted all blame for starting the war and paid billions in reparations.
War Guilt Clause
Required Germany to admit that it alone was responsible for WWI.
Reparations
Payments for war damages. Germany was required to pay $33 billion.
Wilson’s 14 points
Wilson’s proposal for peace after WWI. Although many of the points were adopted into the T of V, however, the complete 14 Points were rejected.
