a barrier to communication between people who are unable to speak a common language

semantic barrier

a barrier to communication that involves slang, dialect, jargon, and other interpretations to a particular word

syntactic barrier

a barrier to communication wherein misunderstanding is caused by incorrect grammar, spelling mistakes, and redundancy

environmental/physical barrier

a barrier to communication wherein there are physical limitations that interefere with the exchanging of information process, such as background noises, temparature, distance, physical obstructions, and the like

psychological/emotional barrier

a barrier to communication that stems from the negative emotions that you internalize, which may hinder your courage. This results you to preventing yourself from expressing your emotions.

physiological barrier

a barrier to communication wherein physical maladies prevent messages from being received correctly. It includes anything related to your health or body. Additionally, this includes differently abled people.

cultural barrier

- a barrier to communication wherein people in the communication process have entirely different culture

- this goes beyond language (more on actions, values, mannerisms)

- this can include a social or religious group (not just country to country)

- kinship

- sexuality

- religion

- gender

- food

- dress code

- cultural taboos

7 Cultural Differences

kinship

- a type of cultural difference wherein basis of societal organization

- refers to familial organizations

- ex. relatives, extended families

individualistic

cultural values such as independence and self-expression, usually Western cultures

collective

cultural values that show family members are close to one another, usually Asian cultures

sexuality

a type of cultural difference wherein different countries are either very conservative or liberated in terms of intimacy

religion

a type of cultural difference wherein each culture has a belief or way of worship

gender

a type of cultural difference wherein people are categorized into the binary categories of female and male or others

ecuminical prayer

a prayer that can be applied to all cultures, traditions, and beliefs

food

a type of cultural difference wherein different countries have different types and flavours of food

dress code

a type of cultural barrier that explains the way people dress differently depending on the country they're in or the tradition that they follow

cultural taboos

ideas that are not allowed to be discussed in certain countries

ex. staring at women in the middle east is considered a cultural taboos
