Independent Variable

A variable that you (the scientist) changes and you have control over. The factor being tested in an experiment.

2
New cards

Dependent Variables

Factor(s) that change in response to other factors. It's what you are measuring in your experiment to see whether or not the independent variable made an impact. This is what the scientist focuses their observations.

3
New cards

Control Group

The control group is the group that does not experience the independent variable. It is used as a benchmark to measure any effects the independent variable had on the experimental group.

4
New cards

Experimental Group

This group experiences the independent variable. We compare the data we collect from this group to our control group to observe any effects the independent variable had.

5
New cards

Constants

Elements of the experimental design that the scientist wants to remain unchanged.

6
New cards

Hypothesis

A testable prediction, a trial idea about something, an educated guess. Should be in If... then... form.

7
New cards

Variables

The elements in an experiment that change. Any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts of types.

8
New cards

Qualitative Data

Any data collected that involves the use of your five senses.

9
New cards

Quantitative Data

Any data collected that deals with numbers (or quantities).

10
New cards

Experimental Design

What you must determine BEFORE you conduct your experiment.

11
New cards

Observation

Information obtained through the senses.

12

Inference

A logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience.
