Electrophoresis
The migration of ions in an electric field, where the velocity of ions is proportional to their charge and inversely proportional to their size and shape.
SDS-PAGE
Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; a method to denature proteins and impart a negative charge using SDS.
Acrylamide
A monomer used to create gels for electrophoresis, known for its neurotoxic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic properties.
Polymerization
The process of combining small molecules (monomers) to form a larger, more complex molecule (polymer), as in the creation of gel matrices.
Rf (Relative Mobility)
A ratio used to compare how far a protein band moves in comparison to the front of the dye during electrophoresis.
Stacking Gel
The top layer of a two-layer gel system used in electrophoresis that allows proteins to concentrate before entering the running gel.
Running Gel
The bottom layer of a gel used in electrophoresis where the actual separation of proteins based on size occurs.
