What is the resting voltage in mammalian cells, also known as the resting membrane potential?
-70mV
What’s the function of the pump? SAQ
A 3:2 ratio of the pump ensures that the voltage inside the cells stays relatively negative. The Na+/K+ pump reinforces the voltage inside the cell at rest.
What are the three Voltage/Membrane Potentials?
Depolarization, Repolarization, & Hyperpolarization
Depolarization
When the voltage inside of a cell becomes positive.
Repolarization
When the voltage inside of a cell becomes negative, but has not yet reached the resting voltage.
Hyperpolarization
When the voltage inside of a cell becomes extremely negative, it surpasses the resting voltage.
What can contribute to the resting voltage of -70mV in mammalian cells?
Some K+ leaking out of the cell
