activating events
events that a person is able to discern and attend to
description in abc model
first from beliefs
=information processing that has a linguistic dubbing and that describe the stimuli in the cognitive system through observational statements
inferences from abc model
second in beliefs
=they stem from descriptions, but go beyond the perceptual act
cold cognitions in abc model
can be functional or dysfunctional but as long as cold cognitions remain unevaluated they are insufficient to produce emotions
evaluative cognitions in abc model
third in beliefs (hot cognitions)
= information processing that is done in relation to description and inferences, can be rational or irrational
hot cognitions
refer to how cold cognitions are processed in terms of their relevance for personal wellbeing
consequences in abc model
can be:
-emotional (positive functional emotions, positive dysfunctional emotions, negative functional emotions, negative dysfunctional emotions)
-behavioral (adaptive or maladaptive behavior: eg. avoidant behavior")
-psychophysiological (eg. sweating, blushing, heart rate etc)
the 4 main irrational beliefs (hot cognitions ellis abc model)
demandingness- dem
awfulizing/catastophizing - awf
global evaluation/self downing - ge/sd
frustration intolerance - fi
demandingness
absolutistic requirements expressed in the forms of shoulds, musts , oughts
awfulizing/catastrophizing
one’s evaluating a situation as more than 100% bad, and the worst thing that could happen to them
global evaluation/self downing
appears when individuals tend to be excessively critical of themselves, of others and of life conditions (ie. making global negative evaluations of themselves, others and of life conditions)
frustration intolerance
people’s beliefs that they can’t endure, or envision being unable to endure a given situation , as well as their beliefs that they will not have happiness at all if what they demand should not exist, actually exists
what is the core /central irrational belief
demandingness
all other irrational beliefs are derived or stem from it
information processing sequence (the 4 ibs)
dem→ awf or fi or ge or sd→ dysfunctional consequences
example of how secondary beliefs results from core (primary) irrational belief
students must absolutely(dem) like me, i couldnt stand (fi) the thought that they dont
students must absolutely(dem) like me, i couldnt stand (fi) the thought that they dont, it would be extremely awful (awf)
students must absolutely(dem) like me, i couldnt stand (fi) the thought that they dont, it would be extremely awful (awf), and it would mean that i am the worst (ge/sd)
