Diatomics
Molecules composed of two atoms.
Di-
A prefix meaning 'two'.
Electron
A negatively charged subatomic particle.
Positive charge (in chemical context)
Indicates an atom or ion has lost electrons.
Negative charge (in chemical context)
Indicates an atom or ion has gained electrons.
LEO (Losing Electrons is Oxidation)
A mnemonic indicating that losing electrons is the process of oxidation.
GER (Gaining Electrons is Reduction)
A mnemonic indicating that gaining electrons is the process of reduction.
Oxidation reaction
A chemical reaction where a species loses electrons.
Reduction reaction
A chemical reaction where a species gains electrons.
Electrolytes
Liquids or gels that conduct electricity due to the presence of ions.
Dissociate
To break apart into ions when dissolved in a solution.
Arrhenius acid
A substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water, fully breaking apart.
Strong Arrhenius acid
An acid that will fully break apart and ionize in water.
Cation
A positively charged ion (e.g., H+).
Anion
A negatively charged ion (e.g., Cl-).
Double arrow reaction / Equilibrium reaction
A reaction indicated by two opposing arrows, meaning it proceeds in both forward and reverse directions and does not go to completion in one direction.
