Phase Change
A process where a substance transitions from one state (solid, liquid, gas) to another due to changes in temperature or pressure.
Heat of Phase Change
The amount of heat required for a substance to change from one phase to another at constant temperature and pressure.
Melting Point
The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid. For example, the melting point of ice is 0°C.
Melting Heat (L_e)
The amount of heat required to melt 1 gram of a solid at its melting point.
Freezing Point
The temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid. For example, the freezing point of water is 0°C.
Freezing Heat (L_d)
The amount of heat released when 1 gram of a liquid freezes at its freezing point.
Vaporization Heat (L_b)
The amount of heat required for 1 gram of liquid to convert into gas at its boiling point.
Condensation Heat (L_y)
The amount of heat released when 1 gram of gas condenses into a liquid at its condensation point.
Specific Heat
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1°C.
Temperature Stability During Phase Change
During a phase change, the temperature of a substance remains constant as heat is absorbed or released.
