what was the anaconda plan, and how did it shape the actions of the south?
after the battle at fort sumter, lincoln ordered a naval blockade to economically strangle the southern confederacy. thus, by the 3rd year of the war, the south suffered from resource shortages. additionally, they would go on to increase production of paper money, deflating its value and trashing military funding.
what did senator crittenden propose in the beginning of the civil war?
congress adopted crittenden’s resolution, affirming the belief that the union had no intentions of interfering with southern confederates’ rights to slavery. obviously, we see this shift towards the end of the war.
who are the fifty fourth?
a group of black militia men in massachusetts commanded by general robert shaw. they were some of the first employments of the union and they demonstrated blacks’ capacity to withstand harsh battle conditions.
what was the morrill land grant college act?
it allowed states to establish agricultural and mechanic colleges in the midst of the administration’s goal to establish internal developments.
what was the dakota war?
in 1851, dakota natives signed treaties with the federal government to define their territory and declare that they would receive resources on a regular basis. however, resource shortages meant that the natives did not receive their resources, thus resulting in attacks on military armies until they were captured and sentenced, threatening lincoln’s presidency
what was the sand creek massacre?
november 1864, colorado militia launched attacks on native westerners; union armies launched southwestern initiatives to punish natives for disruptive raids on ranches and settlements.

congress establishes a national system of chartered banks and revolutionized physical currency forms, now called “greenbacks.”
who was clara barton?
she organized supply lines and nursed wounded soldiers in virginia, eventually becoming a cornerstone of women’s suffrage and became the president of the american national red cross to support battlefields.
what are copperheads?
republicans dubbed opposers of the war “copperheads” in reference to venomous snakes that struck without warning. republicans redefined traditional administration
why would the south attempt to ban cotton production; what was its effect?
british mills that relied on southern cotton exports would thus be damaged by the lack of imports, and would therefore intervene on behalf of the confederacy. however, british (and other cotton-needing countries) didn’t care, and produced their own cotton, eventually causing a crash in cotton’s prices post-civil war.

what are “government girls”
the confederacy required women to work in replacement of men as they all were drafted. women entered newly formed governmental spheres (such as ones made to run commercial establishments and arms factories) to assist the war effort, mobilizing non-slaveholding women.
