frame narrative

a narrative that is told in the form of a story within a story in order to provide multiple perspectives

hyperbole

exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally

in medias res

a narrative that begins in the middle of the action. comes from latin and means “in the middle of things”

irony

a contrast or incongruity between expectations and reality

verbal irony

saying the opposite of what is meant

situational irony

when the outcome of a narrative is contrary to what was expected

dramatic irony

when the audience knows something at least on or more of the characters do not know

juxtaposition

the fact of two things being placed close together with contrasting effect

linear plot

plot that is in chronological order

motif

a recurring element, image, or idea that holds symbolic significance in a story
