What hormones are released by the adrenal medulla?
Epinephrine (80%) and norepinephrine (20%)
What are epinephrine and norepinephrine called?
Catecholamines; fight-or-flight hormones
What triggers epinephrine/norepinephrine release?
Sympathetic nervous system activation, stress ("scary clown scenario")
What are the effects of catecholamines?
Vasoconstriction to less important organs, blood diverted to brain/heart/muscles, increased heart rate, increased blood glucose, bronchodilation
Epinephrine is stronger for what effects?
Bronchodilation, blood flow to skeletal muscles and heart (more metabolic stimulation)
Norepinephrine is stronger for what effects?
Peripheral vasoconstriction and blood pressure
How long do catecholamine responses last?
BRIEF - only minutes (short-lived stressors)
What medical condition is epinephrine used for?
Anaphylactic shock or asthma attacks
