Bursitis
Inflammation of the fluid-filled bursa sac.
Pathophysiology
Repetitive motion or trauma → Inflammation of bursa → swelling and pain
Signs and Symptoms
Localized swelling
warmth, tenderness
Decreased Range of Motion
Risk Factors
Kneeling (house keeping, gardening)
Secondary to Gout or Rheumatoid Arthritis
Repetitive motion (atheletes)
Diagnostics
Clinical Exam
Ultrasound : for bursal fluid visualization
Aspiration: Rule out infection (septic bursitis)
Nursing Management
Rest and Ice
Avoid pressure on joint
use padding
monitor for signs of infection
Pharmacologic Treatment
NSAIDs: Reduce inflammation and pain
Steroid Injection: Local anti-inflammatory effect
Antibiotics: For septic bursitis (culture-guided)
Surgical Interventions
🔪 Bursectomy
Indication: Chronic, recurrent bursitis not responsive to medications
Purpose: Surgical removal of inflamed bursa
Post-op: Elevation, limited joint use temporarily, monitor for signs of infection
