Xylem
Tissue responsible for the transport of water and mineral ions, and provides support.
Phloem
Tissue responsible for the transport of sucrose and amino acids.
Transpiration
The loss of water vapour from leaves.
Root hair cells
Specialized cells in plant roots that absorb water and mineral ions from the soil.
Translocation
The movement of sucrose and amino acids in phloem from sources to sinks.
Cohesion forces
Attraction forces between particles of the same substance, significant in water movement in plants.
Adhesive forces
Attraction forces between particles of different substances, important for water movement along xylem.
Water potential gradient
The difference in water potential that drives the movement of water from the soil into root hair cells.
Cortex
Tissue between the epidermis and vascular bundles, involved in storage and gas exchange.
Stomata
Pores on leaf surfaces that regulate gas exchange and water loss through transpiration.
