Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
A statistical method used to compare means across two or more groups.
F-test
A statistical test used to determine if there are significant differences between the variances of two or more groups.
Between Condition Variability
Variability in data that can be attributed to the differences between the groups being compared.
Within Condition Variability
Variability in data that can be attributed to individual differences within each group.
Sum of Squares (SS)
A measure used in ANOVA that summarizes the variability in the data.
Degrees of Freedom (df)
The number of independent values or quantities which can be assigned to a statistical distribution.
Mean Squares (MS)
The average of the squared differences from the mean, calculated for between and within groups.
F-ratio
A ratio used in ANOVA calculated as MS-between/MS-within which helps to assess the significance of results.
Main Effect
The effect of one independent variable on a dependent variable, ignoring other independent variables.
Interaction Effect
Occurs when the effect of one independent variable on the dependent variable changes depending on the level of another independent variable.
Residuals
The differences between observed and predicted values in a statistical model, which help in analyzing interaction effects.
Simple Effects
Differences between means of conditions in an ANOVA that illustrate the influence of one independent variable at specific levels of another independent variable.
Grand Mean (MG)
The average of all group means in a study.
Tests of Simple Effects
Statistical tests that examine the differences between group means at specific levels of an interacting variable.
Two-Way ANOVA
An extension of ANOVA that includes two independent variables and allows for the assessment of interaction effects.
