Describe the structure and function of the heart.
The heart is the pump that pushes blood around the body. It is located between the two lungs in the mediastinum, behind and slightly to the left of the sternum. The heart is a conical shape approximately 12cm long, 9cm at its widest point and 6cm thick, making it about the size of an adult fist.
