Simile
A comparison using "like" or "as"
Connotation
an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Compound sentence
a sentence with two or more coordinate independent clauses, often joined by one or more conjunctions

Comma
a punctuation mark indicating a pause between parts of a sentence. It is also used to separate items in a list and to mark the place of thousands in a large numeral.
Semi Colon
a punctuation mark which connects two independent parts of a sentence.

Words that are commonly misused or confused. Example: affect, effect; who's, whose
Linking Verb
A verb that does not show action but connects the subject with a word in the predicate.
Passive Voice
The subject of the sentence receives the action.
Dangling Modifier
a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence
Misplaced Modifier
A modifier that is not placed near the word it modifies

the repetition of words or phrases that have similar grammatical structures

A clause that can stand alone as a sentence
dependent clause
A clause in a complex sentence that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and that functions within the sentence as a noun or adjective or adverb
