Hot Working
A manufacturing process where significant shape changes occur by heating the metal above its recrystallization temperature.
Cold Working
The process of shaping metals at room temperature, which increases strength through strain hardening.
Flat Rolling
A process that reduces the thickness of a rectangular cross-section of metal.
Thread Rolling
A process that forms threads on cylindrical parts like bolts and screws.
Forging
An ancient metalworking process dating back to 5000 BC, involving deformation of metal under compressive forces.
Open Die Forging
A forging process where metal is compressed between two flat dies allowing lateral flow.
Impression Die Forging
A process where the die contains a cavity that imparts a shape to the workpiece, leading to advantages in production rate and strength.
Flashless Forging
A forging process where the workpiece is fully constrained in the die, eliminating flash and requiring precise tolerances.
Extrusion
A forming process where metal is forced through a die to create a desired cross-sectional shape.
Direct Extrusion
A type of extrusion where the final shape is determined by the die opening, with some material remaining called the butt.
Indirect Extrusion
An extrusion process that can produce solid or hollow sections, with challenges such as lower rigidity.
Rolling Mills
Machines used to reduce the thickness of metal by passing it through rolls in various configurations.
Shearing
A cutting operation using a blade inclined to create a smooth cut through metal.
Bending
The process of deforming metal into an angle or curve.
V-Bending
A bending process performed using a V-shaped die.
Metal Drawing
A cold-working process to create round cross-sections through processes like making cans.
Spinning
A method where a rotating mandrel shapes an axially symmetric part using tools.
Turning
A machining operation using a single-point cutting tool to remove material from a rotating workpiece.
Drilling
The machining process that creates round holes using a drill or drill bit.
Milling
A machining operation that feeds work past a rotating tool with multiple cutting edges.
Broaching
A machining process using a multiple tooth cutting tool moved linearly, offering good surface finish and close tolerances.
