What happens in bonds that allow us to pass IR through them?
Bonds vibrate. Strong bonds vibrate faster than weaker bonds. Heavy atoms vibrate slower than lighter atoms.
How does this let us plot IR spectroscopy graphs?
Vibrating bonds can absorb IR. IR can be passed through organic molecules causing absorption of specific frequencies.
What do the peaks show?
Absorption of IR at different frequencies.
Fingerprint region
complex series of peaks specific to a molecule. Usually ran through a computer
How is IR spectroscopy used to prevent global warming?
can monitor CO and NO in car exhausts.
Breathalyser = monitor alcohol in breath.
