Jamestown
The first permanent English settlement in North America, established in 1607 in Virginia, which played a crucial role in the early colonization of the Americas.
Middle Passage
The brutal journey enslaved Africans took across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas, characterized by inhumane conditions and high mortality rates.
They had to suffer in tight spaces, often shackled together, with little access to food or sanitation. Many did not survive the journey.
Indentured Servants
individuals who agreed to work for a period of time in exchange for passage to America, land, or other benefits. This system was common in the 17th and 18th centuries as a way to address labor shortages.
Puritan
A religious group that sought to purify the Church of England and establish a more godly society. They played a significant role in the early settlement of New England.
Mayflower compact
An agreement made by the Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower in 1620, establishing self-governance and a social contract for their colony in Plymouth.
Mercantilism
Governments trying to make money. They also use their power to make businesses thrive.
French and Indian War
A conflict between Britain and France in North America from 1754 to 1763, primarily over territorial claims. It resulted in British dominance in North America and significant debt that led to colonial taxation.
