Foundations of Law

Statutory Law

Administrative Law

Common Law

Civil Law
Branch of law that deals with disputes between individuals or organizations, typically involving compensation.
Criminal Law
Branch of law that deals with offenses against society, where the government prosecutes the offenders.
Burden of Proof
The level of evidence required to prove a case in court; varies between civil and criminal cases.
Contract
A legally enforceable agreement between two or more parties.
Genuine Assent
An agreement made freely and willingly, without coercion or deception.
Breach of Contract
Failure to perform any term of a contract without a lawful legal excuse.
Compensatory Damages
Monetary compensation awarded to a plaintiff for actual losses suffered.
Fraud
An intentional deception resulting in damage to another party.
UCC (Uniform Commercial Code)
A set of laws that regulate commercial transactions in the United States.
Sole Proprietorship
A business entity owned and operated by a single individual, who bears unlimited personal liability.
Negligence
Failure to use reasonable care that results in harm to another person.
Intentional Tort
A wrongful act done on purpose that results in harm to another.
Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to hear and decide cases.
Plaintiff
The person who initiates a lawsuit.
Defendant
The individual or entity being accused in a court of law.
Discovery Process
A pre-trial procedure where parties obtain evidence from each other.

Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for a phenomenon, which can be tested.
