What is a free radical?
Free radicals have an odd number of electrons and the unpaired electron in the outer valence shell make radicals very reactive.

The polar vortex traps cold air and chlorine during winter, then sunlight in spring activates chlorine radicals that rapidly destroy ozone, creating the Antarctic ozone hole.
