Terminology
A discipline that systematically studies the designation of concepts particular to subjects and fields of study.
Base word
The most basic form of a word that can carry meaning by itself.
Root word
A word from another language, usually Greek or Latin, that needs a prefix or suffix to make sense.
Affix
A word part that can change the meaning of base or root words.
Prefix
Letters or groups of letters added to the beginning of a word to create a new word.
Suffix
Letters or groups of letters added to the end of a word to create a new word.
Abiotic
Characterized by the absence of life.
Autotrophs
Organisms that can produce their own food from inorganic substances.
Biodiversity
The diversity of plant and animal life in a region.
Ecosystem
A community of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment.
Parasitology
The area of biology concerned with the dependence of one living organism on another.
Host
An organism that harbors a parasite.
Symbiosis
An association in which both organisms are so dependent on each other that one cannot survive without the other.
Commensalism
An association where the parasite benefits without harming the host.
Parasitism
An association in which the parasite benefits at the host's expense.
Zoonosis
A disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Endoparasite
A parasite that lives inside the body of its host.
Ectoparasite
A parasite that lives on the surface of its host.
Vector
An agent that transmits infection from one host to another.
Immunity
The ability of the body to resist infection or disease.
Recombination
A form of DNA produced by combining genetic materials from different sources.
Virus
A microscopic organism that can infect host cells and tissues.
Anticodon
A sequence of three nucleotides forming a genetic code in transfer RNA.
Viral replication
The process by which viruses reproduce within host cells.
Infection ways
The various methods by which viruses and parasites enter the body.
