Inflammation
Immunologic defense against tissue injury, infection, or allergy, delivering fluid, blood products, and nutrients to injured tissue.
Cirrhosis
A chronic liver disease characterized by the replacement of liver tissue by fibrous scar tissue.
Hepatitis
An inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by viral infections or toxic substances.
Cholecystitis
An inflammation of the gallbladder, often due to gallstones.
Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas, which can be acute or chronic.
Appendicitis
An inflammation of the appendix, often requiring surgical intervention.
Modifiable risk factors
Factors that can be changed or controlled to affect the risk of inflammation.
Non-modifiable risk factors
Factors that cannot be changed and may increase the risk of inflammation.
Paracentesis
A medical procedure that involves the removal of fluid from the abdomen.
Cholecystectomy
Surgical removal of the gallbladder.
TIPS procedure
Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, a procedure to create a pathway in the liver.
Sengstaken-Blakemore tube
A tube used to control bleeding from esophageal varices.
Asterixis
A type of tremor; a sign of hepatic encephalopathy.
CBC
Complete blood count; a common blood test that measures different components of blood.
CMP
Comprehensive metabolic panel; a blood test to assess metabolic functions.
LFTs
Liver function tests that evaluate the liver’s health.
Antiemetics
Medications used to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting.
Diuretics
Medications that promote the excretion of urine.
Proton pump inhibitors
Medications that reduce stomach acid production.
Vasodilators
Medications that dilate blood vessels to improve blood flow.
Beta blockers
Medications that reduce heart rate and blood pressure.
Narcotics
Opioids that are used for pain relief.
Collaboration
Working together with healthcare professionals to improve patient care.
