Nation

A group of people in a given geographical area with common heritage, beliefs and values.

EX: Kurds

Nation-State

A singular nation of people who fulfill the qualifications of a state form a nation-state.

• Strive to preserve distinctive cultural characteristics

EX: Japan and Iceland

Multistate Nation

Occurs when a nation has a state of its own but stretches across borders of other states.

• Contains characteristics of both state and nation

EX: Korea and Romania

Autonomous Regions

A defined area within a state that has a high degree of self-government and freedom from its parent state.

• Operates under parent state

EX: Native Americans Reservations

Stateless Nations

Cultural groups that have no independent political entity are called stateless nations.

Multinational State

A country that contains more than one nation.

• Typically consist of one dominant nation

EX: Canada
