Patriot Act (2001)
Law responding to 9/11. Expands anti-terrorist powers (wiretapping, surveillance); 1st & 4th Amendment concern for civil liberties. The law increased funding to border patrol & immigration/customs officials to improve national security. It also allowed the CIA & FBI to share information.
Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp
American military base converted to a prison after 9/11. A controversial prison facility located on territory occupied by the U.S. military in Cuba, but not technically part of the United States, the facility serves as an extra-legal holding area for suspected terrorists. It has been criticized for human rights violations and lack of due process, often associated with indefinite detention and harsh interrogation techniques.
Homeland Security Department
This department combined over 20 federal agencies with 170,000 employees, including Customs, Immigration and Naturalization, the Coast Guard, and the Secret Service. It was one of the largest governmental reorganizations since the introduction of the Department of Defense following World War II. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents are part of DHS (Department of Homeland Security).
