Cold War
A period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union and the United States after World War II.
Mutual Deterrence
A military and political strategy where two or more opposing sides possess sufficient nuclear weaponry to deter an attack.
Proxy War
A conflict where two opposing countries or powers support combatants in a third country to fight on their behalf.
Berlin Blockade
A Soviet blockade of land routes into West Berlin from June 1948 to May 1949 that led to the Berlin Airlift.
Berlin Airlift
Operation in which the United States and its allies flew in supplies to West Berlin during the Soviet blockade.
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance of Western nations established for mutual defense against the Soviet threat.
Warsaw Pact
A military alliance of communist nations in Eastern Europe formed in 1955 in response to NATO.
Domino Theory
The belief that a political event in one country will cause similar events in neighboring countries, particularly related to the spread of communism.
Cuban Missile Crisis
A 1962 confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States over Soviet missiles deployed in Cuba.
Antinuclear Weapons Movement
A global movement opposing nuclear weapons and advocating for their disarmament.
Korean War
A conflict from 1950 to 1953 between North Korea (with Chinese and Soviet support) and South Korea (supported by UN forces led by the US), resulting in a divided Korea.
Vietnam War
A conflict from 1955 to 1975 where North Vietnam fought against South Vietnam, which was supported by the US, leading to the fall of Saigon.
Bay of Pigs
A failed invasion of Cuba by a CIA-sponsored paramilitary group in April 1961 aiming to overthrow Fidel Castro.
Berlin Wall
A wall that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989, symbolizing the division between the communist East and capitalist West.
Test-Ban Treaty
An agreement signed in 1963 to prohibit nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere, underwater, and in space.
Contra War
A conflict in Nicaragua from 1981 to 1988 between the Sandinista government and the Contra rebels, aided by the United States.
Hot Line
A direct communication link established in 1963 between the United States and the Soviet Union to facilitate dialogue during crises.
