Brønsted-Lowry acid
A compound that donates a proton to another compound.
Brønsted-Lowry base
A compound that accepts a proton from another compound.
Conjugate base
The species that remains after an acid donates H⁺; it can act as a proton acceptor in the reverse reaction.
Conjugate acid
The species formed when a base accepts H⁺.
Acid ionization
The reaction between a Brønsted-Lowry acid and water.
Base ionization
The process where a species accepts protons from water molecules.
Amphiprotic
A species capable of either donating or accepting protons.
Amphoteric
A term used for acids and bases per definitions other than the Brønsted-Lowry one; describes a species that can act as both an acid and a base.
Autoionization
The process in which like molecules react to yield ions.
Ion-product constant for water (Kw)
The equilibrium constant for the autoionization of water: Kw = [H3O+][OH-].
