What is propaganda ?
it’s spreading messages to encourage people to think in a positive way about someone e.g showing off elizabeth’s wealth and power through processions and progressions
What is censorship ?
preventing people from saying or publishing things that would damage someone’s reputation
Why would government use propaganda ?
to promote a particular viewpoint in order to influence or persuade people in believing the government and what they say
Why would government use censorship ?
to protect their image, reputation etc. and so in the eyes of the public - they look ‘perfect’
What did E.’s portraits show ?
they were full of symbols or details that spread positive messages about her

many nobles had it in their homes to show their loyalty
they were sent abroad to impress foreign rules
What happened to portraits that cause the queen ‘great offence’ ?
they were burned - this is an example of censorship
Message of her portraits : that she was england’s rightful ruler ? - explain this
this is because obviously elizabeth was protestant and many catholics believed that she basically had no right to be the queen therefore, to show that she was a rightful ruler, her portraits included the orb/ sceptre/sword of justice/a tudor rose

so her portraits showed her standing on a map of england or wth her hand on a globe

her portraits showed her wearing expensive dresses and jewellery

as Elizabeth grew older her portraits basically hid any sign of her ageing because this was a sign of weakness

so sometimes Elizabeth was shows with a serpent - which was a sign of wisdom - and she was also painted with a rainbow or bringing in sunshine after a storm which showed that she was bringing hope to the country

basically some of her portraits included symbols to show that she was the mother of her people and that she was willing to sacrifice herself to protect them

they were trips made by the queen around the country
