Where does gas exchange occur?
it occurs between lungs and blood as well as blood and tissues
What is external respiration?
it is the diffusion of gas between blood and lungs
What is internal respiration?
it is the diffusion between blood and tissues
In regards to internal respiration, what is partial pressure of O2 in tissue compared to in arterial blood? Why?
the partial pressure of O2 in tissue is ALWAYS less than the partial pressure in arterial blood
this is so oxygen moves from the blood to the tissues
In regards to internal respiration, what is partial pressure of CO2 in tissue compared to in arterial blood? Why?
the partial pressure of CO2 in tissue will ALWAYS be greater than the partial pressure in arterial blood
this is so CO2 moves from the tissues into the blood
What is the partial pressure of O2 and CO2 in venous blood as the blood returns back to the heart? Why?
PO2: 40 mmHg
PCO2: 45 mmHg
Oxygen is less that CO2
this is due to oxygen being used up by the tissues and the CO2 coming back from the tissue (that is where it is formed)
