Ice Age

Times when the earth cooled and ice covered much of the earth’s land

Climate

The patterns of weather in a region over a long period of time

Eastern Africa

The region where the first Hominins evolved, including our near human ancestors.

Land Bridge

A region of land, revealed by lowering ocean levels, that connects two areas that were previously separated by water.

glaciers

Large sheets of ice, sometimes a mile thick, that can cover huge areas of land.

Hunter-Gatherer

A person whose main job is to produce food through hunting animals or gathering edible plants.

Paleolithic

Old Stone Age: Period of time when humans made and used stone tools for hunting and gathering (this was the time BEFORE farming).

Archaeologists

Scientists who learn about the past through studying ancient objects and fossils.

Fossils

The preserved remains of living things.

Nomads

People who do not live permanently in one place. Instead, they move from place to place and live in shelters that can be transported.

Technology

Tools that help people accomplish a task or do a job.

Flint Tools

Stone objects created by breaking off sharp flakes of stone and using the sharp edge as a tool.

Wooly Mammoths

Extinct relatives of modern elephants with thick woolly coats that kept them warm during the Ice Ages.

Animal Hide

The skins and fur coats of animals that were dried and used by humans for clothing and shelter.

Culture

The shared way of life of a group of people who have similar beliefs and traditions.

Gesture

A  motion that carries meaning; such as a hand wave

Spoken Language

Organized groups of sounds that carry complex meanings.

To change oneself or one's environment to help one survive.
