magnets
Magnets are materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt that can experience a non-contact force similar to forces on an electric field.
magnetic fields
lines of force in space (flux) with three basic characteristics:
1. the lines of flux travel from the south pole to the north pole inside the magnet and from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet creating elliptical loops
2. lines of flux in the same directions repel each other, and lines of flux in the opposite direction attract each other
3. magnetic fields are distorted by magnetic materials and are unaffected by nonmagnetic materials
electromechanical devices: electric motor
an electric current produces a mechanical motions
electromechanical devices: generator/dynamo
converts the mechanical energy of the motion to electrical energy
electromechanical devices: transformers
changes the intensity of alternating voltage and current
faraday's law
regulates the strength of induced current when magnetic lines of force and a conductor are in motion relative to one another-
Factors:
1. the strength of the magnetic field
2. the speed of the motion between lines of force and the conductor
3. the angle of the conductor to the magnetic field
4. the number of turns in the conducting coil
solenoid
A current-carrying coil of wire with many loops that acts as a magnet
rectifiers
Convert AC to DC
