Resurrection
Jesus’s literal rising from the dead, his sacrifice and role is realized
he’s not crazy or a liar
Risen Life
humanity’s perfect state
same qualities of a person but we are outside of space and time
Easter Morning
Mary Magdalene and some others go to Jesus’s tomb but the stone covering it has been removed
they tell the disciples
Peter and John come look
after that, the disciples and Mary start seeing Jesus because he appears to them
Apostle
a witness to the resurrection sent by Christ to proclaim the Good News of salvation
Apostles recognize that Jesus and the Risen Christ is one and the same individual
Apostles receive an order from God to proclaim the Kerygma
Kergyma
that which is proclaimed in the context of Christ
Road to Emmaus
Jesus walks with two disciples who feel betrayed by him dying
he explains Scripture to them as they walk away from Jerusalem
they’re walking away from the Church but it’s Christ’s duty and ours to walk with others and show them the Kingdom
when Jesus breaks the bread he reveals himself
his sacrifice revealed him to those who were blind
the disciples run back to Jerusalem and proclaim what they’ve heard
our duty is to be with the Church and proclaim the Good News
Mary at the Tomb
Mary Magdalene asks two angels at the tomb where Jesus is
she turns around and sees Christ as a gardener
she only recognizes him after he calls her name
she embraces him but he asks her to let go because he hasn’t ascended yet
she reports this to the disciples
Appearance to the Disciples
Jesus appears to the disciples and says, “Peace be with you.”
breathes on them and says to, “receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven, whose sins you retain are retained”
they are now Apostles and can forgive sins
Tiberius
six disciples go fishing with Peter
they don’t catch anything until Jesus appears and tells them to cast their nets on the right side of the ship
they catch 153 fish (represents the 153 nations of the world at the time who they must go to and “catch” into the Kingdom)
after Jesus makes breakfast and they eat it, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him
then he asks Peter three times to feed his lambs
this counters Peters threefold denial
Apologetic
a reasoned defense of a statement believed to be true
Church has apologetics that can defend the Catholic belief in the reality of the Resurrection
Theories and Apologetics
Fraud Theory
the followers of Jesus made up some or the entire story for personal gain
rebuttal: the disciples gained nothing for their efforts other than persecution and death
Mistaken Theory
Apostles were hallucinating or confused
rebuttal: no evidence is offered to suggest the cause of the hallucinations; if it was a mistake, why not produce the dead body of Jesus to correct the mistake?
Theories and Apologetics 2
Hypothetical Theory
Apostles constructed a non-historic symbolic story based on a fictional resurrection
rebuttal: they were probably illiterate; the proclamation started right away and has never stopped; usually a false story about a famous person starts long after all witnesses are gone.
Intimidation Theory
Apostles claimed they saw the Risen Christ out of fear
rebuttal: no one with political power would have benefited from the claim
Fallacy, Sophistry
argument with faults
sophistry is constructing fallacious arguments
Fallacies of Relevance
a fallacy of relevance is when information that isn’t relevant to the topic is introduced or when parts of the story are taken out of context for an argument
Fallacies of Reason
a fallacy of reason happens when what you base your argument on doesn’t support what you conclude
Property
a condition of something that is always true (i.e., birds always have feathers—the feather is a property of the bird)
Fallacies of Ambiguity
fallacies of ambiguity happen when you use words in a way that isn’t clear
Eschatology
the study of the final events in human history
Parousia
the second coming of Jesus in the role of the Son of Man
Apostolic Eschatology
Apostolic Eschatology refers to the three views concerning the end time present in the Christian movement since the apostolic age
Imminent: Parousia soon
Imminent in the sense that for each of us the Parousia begins when we die
Delayed: Parousia will occur after some mission has been fulfilled
Delayed in the sense that we will leave others behind when we die
Realized: The Son of Man has already come in power
Realized in the sense that God has given us the power to respond today
Apocalyptic
symbolic writing style that offers hope and encouragement to persecuted Christians
Apocalyptic Writings address the question: How can we be the Chosen people of God if our lives are filled with suffering and victimization?
