Iterative design meaning
when you are developing your design you need to make small changes and developments throughout the designing and modelling stages.
Examples of iterative design methods are:
Making lots of models.
Using CAD to develop and show a range of solutions.
Getting regular feedback from your client, users and by testing and evaluating your models.
important for the designing/modelling stages
what is primary data?
data that you have collected and analysed yourself.
what is secondary data?
data that has already been collected by another person.
What are examples of primary data?
Taking measurements.
Questionnaires.
Interviews.
Actual product analysis.
This is analysing how a product functions and looks.
Disassembly.
To take a product fully apart to see how it fits together or functions.
Material testing.
How strong or durable is the material.
What are examples of secondary data?
Books, magazines and web pages.
Data and statistics from companies, the government or researchers.
Work of existing designers or other pupils.
Media outlets such as the news, radio and TV.
What is market research?
Working out a solution to your design brief will require you to have good reason and evidence that your product is required and will be useful.
Gather information from people who will use your product and your client throughout the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) which is your coursework.
What is ergonomics?
Ergonomics is the study of human interactions with products. How a product looks, feels and works can make a difference to its success.
What is anthropometrics?
Anthropometrics is the measurements of humans such as their height, weight, size and reach.
Examples of ergonomics:
A good example of great ergonomic shape is the PC mouse and how comfortably it fits into your hand.
Ergonomics is also how easy something is to use.
For example, a kettle allows you to see how much water is inside it.
It has a light to show it is switched on along with a removable base. All these features improve the ergonomic design
Examples of anthropometrics?
The clothes we buy come in set sizes such as small medium or large.
5th – 95th percentile is ensuring the product you design would fit and suit 90% of the target market.
To get these sizes companies will measure people to understand how big or small a product needs to be.
What is a design brief?
You are required to write a design brief and specification as part of your NEA.
For example:
Design and make a children's toy inspired by space.
The product will need to be eye catching, safe and educational.
When may you change your design brief?
Design briefs and specifications can change throughout your project.
Your brief will change as you conduct more research.
You may change the brief after modelling and testing your idea.
You may also change the brief following client feedback.
What is a manufacturing specification?
You will need to write a manufacturing specification that will list what your product MUST do and COULD do.
By doing a range of research and speaking with your client you will be able to write the manufacturing specification.
What are categories to consider when writing a manufacturing specification?
Aesthetics.
Customer.
Cost.
Environment.
Safety.
Size.
Function.
Materials.
What are the effects of deforestation?
Deforestation is the removal of trees and forests. This means that animals lose their habitats and can contribute to climate change. You need to consider the impact on the environment when designing your product.
What are the effects of mining on the environment?
Raw materials used to make materials for products can have a huge impact on the environment.
Mining for metals can contaminate the soil and cause erosion of the soil or even sinkhole
