New cards

Hyde is Amoral

When you are immoral you know what's right and wrong but you go against it any way (like Utterson drinking alone)

When you are amoral your not aware what's right and wrong (just like an animal if they kill there unaware it's wrong)

This is why Hyde is amoral as he is unaware of the social codes and if he goes against them he almost seems unaware of the consequence's.

4
New cards

This means that they are savage or cruel, so we can see that Hyde is completely savage and cruel, he has no regards to the way he acts. He acts barbarically with little regards.

Key quote: from Chapter 1 story of the door - Enfield

1. "There is something wrong with his appearance" - Said by Enfield who witnessed Hyde the first time and is telling Utterson in chapter one.

This quote plays into the Victorian idea of Physiognomy, For example as Hyde looks displeasing and Malformed, he therefore is evil. Therefore looks reflect his nature.

So from the beginning, we see those ideas of Physiognomy, in the way that he is presented by the quote.

Also the diction on "wrong" could connote, immorality, (wrong / immoral) Then this therefore shows from the beginning that Hyde is inextricably linked with evil and immorality and sin. Therefore this foreshadows his evil barbarity throughout the rest of the novella.

Alternatively, we could link the idea of wrong and amorality to religion, which is a contextual link to the Victorian era as they were highly religious.

So we can see that Hyde almost parallels his devilish characteristics shown that he is more alike to sin, hell and the devil than he is to morality , purity and God.

" Like a Damned juggernaut"

The idea of "Damned" having a biblical illusions to hell, foreshadows Hyde's destiny.

This use of a simile compares Hyde to 'some damned Juggernaut', establishing him as an unstoppable force. This foreshadows how his evil gathers in strength and becomes uncontrollable.

The religious illusion's the Juggernaut holds as well: In Hindu mythology, the name (meaning Lord of the World)

Se he calls him the lord of hell.

10
New cards

"Trampled Calmly"

This Oxymoron indicates his dual nature from the beginning. Duality being a key theme.

Writers and poets use oxymorons to bring dramatic effect to their writing. When two contrasting words are juxtaposed, this makes us, as readers, stop and think.

The reader would be completely appalled at his actions, especially as he did this to a defenceless child, someone who is innocent and fragile.

The violent verb "trampled" emphasises the violence and the deliberate intent felt by Hyde during his action. It highlights Hyde's evil nature.

The adverb "calmly" reveals how as Hyde, he has no emotional or moral reaction to this violent deed, as if he has done it before
