Monogastric
A type of digestive system with a single-chambered stomach, typical in animals like pigs.
Ruminant
An animal with a four-compartment stomach, such as cattle, sheep, and goats, capable of microbial fermentation.
Gastrointestinal tract (GIT)
The passageway in an animal from mouth to anus, involving the stomach and intestines.
Rumen
The largest compartment of a ruminant's stomach, where microbial fermentation occurs.
Reticulum
The second compartment of the ruminant stomach, also known as the honeycomb due to its texture.
Omasum
The third compartment of the ruminant stomach, responsible for particle size reduction and water absorption.
Abomasum
The true stomach of ruminants where chemical breakdown of food occurs, similar to a monogastric stomach.
Rumination
The process involving regurgitation, remastication, resalivation, and reswallowing of food in ruminants.
Eructation
The act of belching or expelling gas from the rumen through the mouth.
Bloat
A condition in ruminants caused by the accumulation of gas in the rumen, potentially leading to serious health risks.
Cud
Boluses of feed that are regurgitated, chewed again, and swallowed by ruminants during the process of rumination.
Ingesta
Food material that is ingested by an animal.
Microbial fermentation
The breakdown of food by microorganisms in the rumen, resulting in the production of gases and nutrients.
Papillae
Small finger-like projections in the rumen that aid in absorption and digestion.
Emergency treatment for bloat
Methods such as stomach tubing, administration of oil, or using a trocar to release gas from the rumen.
Treatment of bloat:
Immediately removing all food
Isolating animal
Managing water intake
Forcing them to walk around
Stomach Tubing
Passing a rubber horse down its esophagus and into the rumen → Providing a mechanical release of gas
Administration of oil:
Using vegetable oil drench will reduce the surface tension and allow the gas to escape
Trocar:
Used only in case of emergency
A device that punctures the rumen from the outside
Rapid and effectivr means of releasing gas
