Atom
The smallest unit of an element, consisting of a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
Nucleus
The positively charged center of an atom, made up of protons and neutrons.
Proton
A positively charged sub-atomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
A neutral sub-atomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron
A negatively charged sub-atomic particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom.
Relative charge
A measure of the charge of a particle compared to another particle.
Relative mass
A comparison of the mass of a particle with the mass of another particle.
Electrostatic attraction
The force that holds the negatively charged electrons and positively charged nucleus together.
Analogies
Comparisons made to explain concepts by relating them to something familiar.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Nucleon number
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom, also known as the mass number.
