What is Metabolic Syndrome?
A group of diseases that affect metabolism such as Diabetes, obesity, elevated BP, Elevated blood cholesterol, insulin resistance.
Why do females have a higher life expectancy?
Due to hormones having a protective effect
List 6 dimensions of Wellness
-Physical
-Emotional
-Intellectual
-Spiritual
-Interpersonal and social
-Environmental
Define Genotype vs Phenotype
Genotype = our genes
Phenotype = expression of our genes (result)
What is Epigenetics?
Study of how environment can turn certain genes on or off and change phenotype
How to get people to move?
Start with simple activities they enjoy to build momentum and habit
Describe Health Related Components of Fitness.
1. Cardiorespiratory Endurance
2. Muscular Strength
3. Muscular Endurance
4. Flexibility
5. Body Composition
1. Ability of body to take in oxygen efficiently, distribute through blood to muscles and for muscles to take in and use it
2. Ability to exert force on an object
3. Ability to exert sub-maximal force for a long period of time
4. Ability of joints to move safely through a range of motion
5. No way to specifically train. Shouldn’t be a goal to change. Move away from using to determine fitness
Describe Performance-Related Components of Fitness:
1. Power
2. Speed
3. Agility
4. Balance
5. Motor Skill
1. The ability of muscles to apply maximum force in minimum time (power = force x velocity)
2. The rate of change of position
3. The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another
4. The ability to control the placement of the body.(Can be argued to be a health related component due to large amount of dangerous senior falls)
5. The ability to combine several movement patterns into a singular pattern (also called coordination or accuracy)
Why should coordination be considered health-related component of fitness instead?
Motor Control(coordination) of the spinal muscles is essential for back health and many movements
Complete the following relationship: genotype + <??> → phenotype
+ Environment
Write down one definition of fitness that you feel is as complete as possible.
Being able to participate in and do activities that you want and need to be able to do without much struggle. As well as improving physical and mental health.
The question, “are you fit?” can only be correctly answered by the counter-question “fit for what?” Explain what this statement means.
Being fit is specific to the activity you train for therefore are “fit” for. For example someone can be very fit in powerlifting but may not be fit for running a 5k and vice versa.
What are the basic differences between health-related and performance-related components of physical fitness?
Health-related components are as mentioned in the name focusing on improving general health. While performance-related are focusing on improving a specific type of performance for example certain athletes need to train their agility, speed and balance for their sport while others may need more power and reaction time.
Separation of components into health-related and performance-related may not be an ideal model. Give one argument on this topic.
It may lead to a average person looking to become more fit to avoid the performance-related components as they feel it is not for them since they are not serious athtletes, but Balance and Coordination can also be very important components of fitness as they can help avoid serious falls in older adults.
