Amorphous
Lacking a definite shape.
Crystalline
Having a crystal structure.
Volatile
Easily reacts.
Vapor Pressure
Pressure of evaporating water.
Viscosity
Thickness of a liquid.
Surface Tension
The attraction of a liquid's surface molecules.
Sublimation
Solids becoming gases.
Boiling Point
Point at which liquid becomes a gas.
Melting Point
The point where a solid becomes a liquid.
Evaporation
When a liquid turns to gas.
Deposition
Gases turning into solids.
Condensation
When a gas turns into a liquid.
Solution
A liquid mixture composed of a solute and a solvent.
Solute
The substance being dissolved into a solvent.
Solvent
A substance that dissolves a solute (e.g., water).
Solubility
The ability to dissolve; like dissolves like.
Saturated
The maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent.
Unsaturated
Anything less than the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve.
Supersaturated
More solute than can normally be dissolved.
Miscible
Two liquids that can mix. (e.g., lemonade and sweet tea)
Immiscible
Two liquids that cannot mix (e.g., oil and water).
Electrolyte Solution
A solution with ions that conducts electricity.
Nonelectrolyte Solution
A solution without ions that does not conduct electricity.
Dissociation
Solute separates into particles (endothermic).
Hydration
Solvent molecules surround solute particles.
Colligative Property
Solution properties that change when solutes are added.
Colloid
A solution that doesn't stay in solution over time (e.g., milk, paint).
Suspension
A mixture that settles immediately and quickly becomes unmixed.
Alloy
A combination of different metals (e.g., brass, bronze, pewter).
