Sensation
The transmission of sensory input from the environment into the brain.
Perception
The interpretation of sensory information by the brain to form mental representations of the environment.
Sensory Adaptation
The process of becoming less sensitive to constant stimuli, helping us notice changes.
Psychophysics
The study of how characteristics of sensory stimuli relate to our perception of them.
Transduction
The process of converting sensory input into a neural signal via sensory receptors.
Olfaction
The sense of smell, processed through pathways to the primary olfactory cortex and limbic system.
Gustation
The sense of taste, involving taste receptor cells and pathways to the primary gustatory cortex.
Taste Buds
Groups of taste receptor cells that respond to different types of taste stimuli.
Audition
The sense of hearing, involving sound waves that cause vibrations transmitted through the ear.
Somatosensation
The sense that allows us to perceive touch, pain, temperature, pressure, and vibration.
Qualitative Information
Information regarding the type, kind, or category of sensory stimuli.
Quantitative Information
Information regarding the intensity, magnitude, or level of sensory stimuli.
Phonemic Restoration
The perceptual process of filling in missing phonemes in spoken language.
